As we all know size is important, so if you have a large dog, choose from a range of dog beds for large dogs, otherwise your animal maybe cramped and uncomfortable in a bed that is too small for it. When buying your dogs bed it does well to always remember that in this situation size really does matter. Of course a small Chihuahua would love to rest their small head in a big dog bed because they tend to behave as if they are large dogs. However if you have for instance a Great Dane it is not going to enjoy spending time in a dog bed designed for a Chihuahua!! You want your dog to feel safe, secure, and happy in their dog bed. So you will need to buy a bed that fits your dogs needs and the space in your home comfortably.

One helpful step to getting the right dog bed is to measure your dog. When your dog is standing up, measure from tip of nose to base of tail and also from floor to head. This will give you an approximate width and length for a flat dog bed. Then again measure your dog in his normal sleeping position. If they like to stretch out when sleeping, measure their length. If they like to curl up into a ball, measure their diameter.

The next thing to consider is what type of bed to choose, there are many different materials a bed can be made out of, and just as many that it can be filed with. As an example, a bed can be made of polyester and stuffed with fiberfill much like a pillow on your own bed. A bed can also be made from micro-suede or vinyl and filled with memory foam. The material the bed is made from can be critically important. It is good to remember that dogs can have allergies or skin sensitivities to some materials and fillings. Also the purpose for your dog’s bed and their health need to be considered when choosing dog bed materials. For example, if you are using the bed outdoors you will want a waterproof dog bed. None of these choices need to be expensive as you can find cheap dog beds that are just as good as the more expensive ones.

If you have an older dog with bladder control issues then waterproof or easily washable materials are important too, and if your dog is older or you just love to spoil them then a memory foam cushion is soothing on their joints, tendons and muscles. Always bear in mind your dog’s age and health as these are also important considerations when buying a bed, remember although your dog may be quite spritly now he will get older so you may want think ahead and select for the future. For example, if you have an older dog, you need the bed to be easy for them to get into and out of. An raised bed like a pet sofa, may be perfect for bigger dogs so they do not have to bend down to get into their bed. Similarly a littler bed with low sides would be perfect for an older toy breed as this should eliminate them having to climb over any tall sides.
